Expanded metal mesh for lightening protection systems
As the pioneers of manufacturing expanded metal mesh, we are well placed to support the aerospace industry with metal mesh for lightning strike protection systems and aerospace metal composite structures.
In recent years, with the demand to make lighter and more cost-effective products industries have been moving towards the use of composite materials rather than previously used metals.
The benefits of composites are that they are versatile and flexible and don’t lose their shape or corrode in changing weather conditions. They are durable, long-lasting and can be made at a lower cost than their metal counterparts. They are also non-conductive to electricity, which is great when they are used in electrical equipment and structures. However, this is not ideal for structures that could be prone to lightning strike such as aircraft and wind turbines. This is where our expanded metal foils can support.
Lightning strike protection for composite structures
Manufactured from a single piece of material, through a process of stretching and slitting, our micro expanded metal foils offer many of the benefits of composite materials such as having a high strength to weight ratio and they are extremely flexible. In addition, they offer high conductivity.
This is because they are available in a range of conductive metals such as copper, stainless steel, nickel and titanium. And the apertures of the metal mesh provide a route to dissipate electrical currents across the surface of the metal. Therefore, our micromesh can provide lightning strike protection for the composite and the structure below it.
Our experienced team works with composite manufacturers to produce expanded metal mesh foil specific to their requirements. We have invested in our 25,000+sqm site in Hartlepool to bring the machining capabilities to manufacture micromesh alongside the manufacture of traditional metal mesh.
